President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday claimed that only two commanders-in-chief paid attention to the needs of the country's soldiers: himself and late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
He made the remark while visiting Camp General Teodulfo Bautista in Jolo, Sulu.
"Never was a time na walang ibang — hindi ako nagyayabang. Walang ibang presidente, dalawa lang, ang pagbigay na atensyon na kinakailangan para sa isang sundalo. Ako lang pati si Marcos," he said.
"Marcos was also a lover of soldiers," he added.
Duterte also told the soldiers that increases in their salary should reflect in their payroll soon.
During his visit, the President conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu both Kamagi and Kampilan medals on the soldiers who fought in Marawi City.
Duterte also distributed personal sidearms to the soldiers to defend themselves against communist rebels when they get out of camps.
The commander-in-chief also said he would throw a Christmas party for soldiers. He even promised to send troops who would be left at the military camp over the holidays to Hong Kong.
"Uuwi ba halos kayong lahat? Kasi 'yung magpaiwan, tiis lang kayo. Hong Kong ang prize ninyo basta magpa-iwan dito. Hindi pwedeng magdala ng asawa. Kabit lang," he said.
"Sige 'yung maiwan lang dito sa kampo hindi ko naman kayo mapadalang lahat. Maybe one or two or three or four. Magandang collection, ‘di lahat," he added.
Before leaving the camp, Duterte gave each of the soldiers who were celebrating their birthday a wristwatch.
