Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) admitted on Tuesday that some of its members joined the takeover of six resettlement sites in Bulacan province on March 8, despite having been granted social housing units.
Kadamay leader Gloria Arellano also admitted that many of their members are owning multiple units and even renting them out to non-Kadamay members so they can make a living.
In an interview, Arellano admitted that one of her children is working as financial analyst in Canada, and two others are engineers. But the militant leader insisted that she’d been through a lot of difficulties before her children graduated from College.
According to the latest report by the National Housing Authority NHA), around 13,000 units have been occupied by Kadamay, but only 8,000 are settled by registered members. The rest are being rented out to non-members.
Arellano even boasted that she is renting out 27 units and making around ₱48,600 every month.
“If other members are doing it, why can’t I? This is a government property and this supposed to be for all. Kaysa mabulok lang e di paupahan na lang natin?’, Arellano said.
But when asked if the government is benefiting from their occupation and renting-out, Arellano refused to answer.
Another leader Daniel Bartolome admitted that his family occupies 3 units and renting another 12 units.
It was reported earlier that even bona fide residents of Pandi, Bulacan are tempted to occupy some units and then sell it to non-Pandi residents. Some are just renting out.
“Pandio housing units is becoming a lucrative business to people who first occupied it”, another Kadamay member Josefa Lauron, who owns at least 7 units said.
Arellano said they will not back out and will continue what they are doing, and even planning to occupy more government properties if there are opportunities and chances presented to them.
